Art Education (Low-residency/online MA) Program Redesigned to Focus on Studio Art

New art production focus makes program standout from field

Posted 11.02.10 by Center for Art Education

Reflecting MICA’s commitment to the education of students in the studio arts and a desire to provide experienced art educators an opportunity to deepen their studio practice, the Art Education (Low-residency/online MA) program at MICA has been redesigned with a focus on studio art production.  This studio focus distinguishes MICA’s Art Education program from many other graduate programs in art education that have no or minimal studio course offerings.

Beginning in the fall semester of 2010, students in MICA’s studio-focused Art Education program will have the opportunity to complete a 34-credit master’s program with half their credits earned in studio courses and half in art education courses.  The majority of students’ studio courses will take place during the two summer residencies when students work in their individual studios on MICA’s campus.  Online studio courses are also offered during the fall and spring semesters.

By combining two 6-week, summer residencies on MICA’s campus with online instruction during the fall and spring semesters, the studio-focused Art Education program allows artist-educators to complete their MA degree in fourteen months while still maintaining their full-time teaching jobs.

The large, summer studio spaces, the exceptional studio art and art education faculty, and the creative art school culture collectively provide a unique environment for artistic, creative and intellectual growth while pursuing a studio-focused Art Education (Low-residency/online MA) degree at MICA.
