In Communication Arts' January/February 2011 issue, its Typography Annual, MICA is represented with a selection in the Brochures category for the College's undergraduate catalog, as well as two alumni picks, one in Periodicals and the other in Calligraphy/Handlettering. There is also a feature story with a full two-page spread of artwork by Shannon May '10 (illustration).
The undergraduate catalog, dubbed "the smart book," was designed by Bora Shin '04 (graphic design) with art direction by Anthony Rutka '71 (design), at Rutka Weadock Design in Baltimore. "Our challenge was to create a book that would attract smart, savvy, creative students. We designed a 480-page book with 220 pages devoted to the extraordinary artwork of MICA students." Ben Bours '09 (graphic design) won for his first feature spread in GQ magazine (published April 2010). He has since done several spreads for the publication. The winning piece was for an article about Wesley Snipes' tax evasion and fraud charges. To see the spread, click here.
A letter set of vowels entitled And Sometimes Y by Luke Williams '09 (graphic design) was selected in the Calligraphy/Handlettering category. Created for the AIGA-sponsored event, Typeforce: The Annual Chicago Show of Emerging Typographic Allstars, "embodies the spirit of French Neoclassical art, as well as whimsical 1960s Americana ideologies," Williams said. "Vowels are not only the most valuable letters in the alphabet, but also what give the English language its personality." To see the letter set, click here.
In the January/February issue of Graphic Design USA (GDUSA), Stephen Edmond '11 was profiled in the Students to Watch annual feature. The graphic design senior has been very active with the Black Student Union while at MICA, serving on the board, curating the annual exhibition and coordinating this year's Annual Benefit Fashion Show, Genuine Articles, taking place on Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16.
