What is the MICA Leadership Retreat?

Every Spring, MICA hosts the Catalyst Leadership Retreat which provides students with the opportunity to further develop as individuals, leaders, and change agents. During this overnight retreat, participants will work collaboratively to identify issues on campus, brainstorm solutions, and design an action plan for change.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will be able to name their social identities, name their core values, and what motivates them to create social change
  • Participants will demonstrate the skills to work as a group toward a common goal
    • and acknowledge varying viewpoints when working with others
  • Participants will be able to name ways they are currently connected to the MICA/Baltimore community and/or how they would like to be connected moving forward
  • Participants will apply the steps for creating an action plan for change to a community issue or need

Who can attend?

The Catalyst Leadership Retreat is made up of roughly 30 participants and a team of 10 facilitators (students/faculty/staff) who work in pairs to lead small groups of 5-6 participants through the retreat experience.

The Catalyst Leadership Retreat is open to ALL MICA students, however, due to limited space interested students must submit an application to attend. Applications will be reviewed by the Student Leadership and Training Committee. The deadline to apply is Sunday, February 12th. Selected participants will be notified by Friday, February 17.

If you are interested in becoming involved in student leadership positions like being a Residential Advisor (RA), Program Manager (PM), Orientation Leader (OL), or a member/leader of a student organization, we encourage you to submit an application to attend the Catalyst Leadership Retreat.

Overnight retreat? What should I expect?

The Catalyst Leadership Retreat will be hosted at the Mar-Lu-Ridge Conference and Educational Center in Jefferson, MD. This all-season retreat center will give participants the opportunity to get off campus and enjoy cozy cabins, the great outdoors, and community building with other student leaders. All meals will be prepared and served on site (food allergies can be accomodated with advance notice). Participants are expected to bring their own linens and toiletries. Specific information on what to pack will be provided to participants once they are confirmed.

How much does it cost?

The Catalyst Leadership retreat is FREE for all participants and includes transportation, meals, and lodging. However, students who fail to show up for the retreat or cancel within 48 hours will be charged a $20 fee to their Student Account to help offset the cost of the retreat.

I live on campus, but this retreat happens over break. Are the residence halls open?

All on-campus students participating in the Catalyst Leadership Retreat will be permitted to remain on campus. The Office of Residence Life will communicate directly with these students to provide any specific instructions.
