Samuel Smith

1826-1835 and 1849-1851
Professor Samuel Smith was a prominent Baltimore drawing master and founding officer of MICA. He expanded the scope of the institution's core educational programming in drawing and mechanics to embrace fine arts and offer classes for women. His book, Linear Drawing Book, Designed for the Use of Schools, was an early example of the manuals that helped to popularize art education in America.
