Hugh Newell

Principal

1879-1883
After arriving as principal from a term as head of the Pittsburgh School of Design for women, Hugh Newell oversaw a transformation of MICA's programming, focusing for the first time exclusively on art and design education. With a mission to "lay a permanent foundation for a genuine school of high art in Baltimore, the school under Newell's leadership took on the charge of producing art educators for the state of Maryland, extended the school year, and expanded facilities. The school also embarked on its first major fundraising campaign.
