Charles Yardley Turner ’1870

Director

1912-1918
MICA Alumnus Charles Turner led the College as director until his death. An accomplished architect, painter, and academician, he taught at numerous institutions, including the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union, and MICA before his appointment as director. During his tenure, the first summer school sessions were created, the first academic departments were organized, and a four-year program in advertising design was created. Turner was a Baltimore native and served as president of the National Society of Mural Painters.
