Application Requirements for MA Programs

MICA's four MA programs engage new audiences in design, education and research. These unique programs each have specific application requirements, which can be found by following the links in the left sidebar. General application guidelines are listed below.

General Application Procedures

Although each MFA program has specific portfolio and written requirements, a complete application to any MICA program will include the following:

Application Fee

An application fee is assessed on the first application at the submission stage in SlideRoom. Subsequent applications require a processing fee, but not a full application fee.

Academic Documents & Transcripts

Applicants to all programs must send sealed transcripts from all post-secondary institutions. The Office of Graduate Admission recommends gathering all transcripts in institution-issued envelopes and submitting them in a single parcel to ensure their arrival and timely processing. Send all transcripts to:

Office of Graduate Admission

Fred Lazarus IV Graduate Studio Center

131 West North Avenue

Baltimore, MD 21202

Letters of Reference

Applicants to all MFA programs must include 3 letters of reference with their application. Letters are collected online, via the SlideRoom application system. Please note that applicants do not need to wait for references to be collected before submitting the application. References may arrive after the application has been submitted.

Additional Requirements for International Students

Please note that international students may be required to submit additional application materials to be considered for admission. Visit Information for International Graduate Applicants to get more information.

Program-Specific Application Procedures

Before starting the application process, candidates are encouraged to review the program-specific requirements by following the links in the left sidebar of this page. If relevant, candidates are encouraged to apply to multiple programs. Please note that a separate application is required for each program.

MA Program Application Deadlines

Art Education (Low-Residency/Online MA)

Critical Studies (MA)

Social Design (MA)

Teaching (MAT)

Priority Deadline: January 15

Final Deadline: April 1

Priority Deadlines

For programs with priority deadlines, applications submitted on or before the posted date will be reviewed for admission and scholarship before other submissions. All applications submitted after the priority deadline will be reviewed for both admission and scholarship, should space remain in the program. Serious applicants are strongly encouraged to submit applications even if the priority deadline has passed or the program is currently full. Candidates may be offered deferred admission or a position on the alternate list.

Final Deadlines

Programs with final deadlines will not receive or review applications after the posted deadline.

Decision Notification Schedule

MICA conducts an intensive admission and scholarship jury of all application materials, beginning after the initial deadline. Candidates applying by January 15 will receive their initial application decision in early April. Candidates applying after January 15 will receive their decision as it becomes available or by the end of May at the latest.
