Kim Budd, 2009

Kim Budd creates artwork that explores the definitions of space and place. The pre-dominate theme is how these words are culturally defined by America. America's cultural mindset has evolved from the abundance of its vast spaces. Space connotes freedom in American culture. Over time, America has filled those spaces with architectural expansions. Now within American culture there is a unified aesthetic for architecture, i.e. a growing similarity from location to location: malls, grocery stores, suburbs. Place can be seen as an object that defines space, giving it personality. Yet as time progresses, America is becoming a placeless nation.

"My work is a portrait of places, architecture, or objects that define spaces with their personality. I isolate the vernacular landscape."
