Kara Schenk

Kara Schenk received her BFA from Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY) in 1996 and her PhD in art history from The Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) in 2006. She completed her doctoral dissertation on the third-century fresco cycle of the Dura-Europos Synagogue.  The cycle, which was excavated in the eastern part of what is now Syria in the 1930s, represents the most important example of Jewish pictorial narrative in the ancient world.   Her other areas of interest include Jewish and Christian art in Late Antiquity, the art of the Crusader period, and issues related to the nature of image culture in the Byzantine and Western Medieval world.
