Single-stream recycling began at MICA in September 2007. All recyclable items can be placed in a common recycle bin. The items are sorted at a recycling facility. Other, non-recyclable items should be placed in separate trash bins. For a more comprehensive list of recyclable items, please read further or download our MICA Recycling poster.
Items that can be placed in the single-stream recycling bin include:
- Plastic bottles
- Milk jugs
- PVC bottles
- Microwaveable meal trays
- Polystyrene (foam food trays, egg cartons, etc.)
- Aluminum containers (cans)
- Glass containers (brown, clear, or green)
- Paper (newsprint, cardboard, magazines, office paper, mail, pizza boxes, etc.)
What NOT to put in recycle bins:
- Food Scraps
- Coat Hangers
- Light bulbs
- Windows or auto glass
Items for recycling should be placed in waste containers with clear trash bags or in blue dumpsters.
Food and non-recyclable items should be placed in containers with opaque trash bags or in green dumpsters.
The blue plastic recycling bins will still be placed near printers and copiers to collect waste paper. This paper can be placed in the single-stream containers, however, the College is paid for all paper collected though the blue bins.
Each office, classroom, and studio at MICA will have single-stream recycling containers and containers for non-recyclable garbage. Each container is labeled with a sticker on the outside indicating if it is a single-stream recycling container or non-recyclable landfill container. The recycling containers have green recycling stickers. The non-recycling containers have red landfill stickers.
