Humanistic Studies

Building on MICA's outstanding curriculum in the humanities, the new integrated major fully combines in-depth coursework in academics and studio, to prepare practicing artists who are also public intellectuals who contribute to our cultural life as creators and thinkers redefining our ideas of what it means to be human in relation to ourselves, others, and the world.

This unique BFA program allows students to build a depth of understanding in such areas as philosophy and ethics, social and natural sciences, social and political history as understood from a variety of perspectives and inquiry into the human experience that will prepare them as leaders in their fields and for a wide range of academic graduate programs.  Students can choose from the following "integrative" degree plans:

About Our Faculty

MICA humanistic studies faculty have a wide array of research and scholarly interests. Full-time faculty have doctorates in literature, history,and philosophy from such institutions as the university of Chicago, Columbia, George Washington, Johns Hopkins, Penn, Oxford university, Emory, Princeton, Purdue, University of Cambridge, University of Maryland, and Yale. Full-time faculty are supported by a wide array of part-time faculty-together they offer diverse critical perspectives and areas of specialization.

Faculty regularly publish in scholarly journals in such areas as contemporary politics; literature and history; lesbian and feminist studies; film theory and history; the elements of fiction; photographic history and theory; and Medieval French history. They include poets-the coordinator of creative writing is the director of Toadlily press-and published novelists.

Meet Some Of Our Faculty

Firmin DeBrabander, chair of humanistic studies, is a published author with degrees from Boston College and the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, as well as a doctorate from Emory University

Timmy Aziz, chair of the environmental design department at MICA, studied Physics at Trinity College, Oxford University, and architecture at the Cooper Union

Mikita Brottman is a British scholar, psychoanalyst, author, and cultural critic

David Sterritt,  is an author, scholar, and former film critic for The Christian Science Monitor, where, from 1968 until his retirement in 2005, he championed avant garde cinema, theater, and music.
