Section A Meets 2/19/2013 to 4/30/2013 on Tuesday from 6:15 PM to 10:00 PM.

In this foundation course, beginning students develop their ability to perceive and render forms in space on a two-dimensional surface. The course introduces basic drawing techniques and materials, with an emphasis on drawing from observation. Topics covered include line, value, gesture, composition, linear and atmospheric perspective, and mark-making. Note: Students should bring an 18" x 24" newsprint pad (rough), soft to very soft vine charcoal and a large kneaded eraser to the first class.
CSDR 202 Focus on the Figure 1.5 credits Eric Rutledge $585

Section A Meets 2/6/2013 to 5/8/2013 on Wednesday from 6:30 PM to 9:45 PM.

This course, suitable for both the beginning and intermediate student, focuses on gaining proficiency in drawing that most fascinating and complex of subjects, the human figure. Concepts to be covered include anatomy, proportion, gesture, contour and modeling in light and dark. Students will increase their understanding of the dynamics of the human form and build confidence in expressively rendering the figure in two dimensions. Working from a live model with varied poses, lighting and settings, students will progress from quick studies that aim to capture the essence of line and form to extended poses, working towards longer and more finished compositions as the course culminates. A variety of drawing media and techniques, such as charcoal, conte crayon, graphite and ink, will be introduced. Slide discussions, critiques, demonstrations and out of class drawings round out the experience.
CSPT 217 Narrative Painting 1.5 credits Randi Reiss-McCormack $585

Section A Meets 2/19/2013 to 4/30/2013 on Tuesday from 6:15 PM to 10:00 PM.

This course is designed for the artist who wants to develop the narrative voice that may be nascent in his or her work and find a suitable mode of storytelling through the use of painted images. Working through various modes of painting - from personal expression to social commentary - and collecting images from numerous and diverse sources, we will build a vocabulary for the painted narrative. In class we will start with student generated set-ups, landscape and figure studies. We will work on ways to combine these varied elements from life and explore the place of process media (e.g., print, video and computer-generated images) in this overall fusion. We will look at the changing role of representation and narrative in the history of painting and explore the techniques, subjects and formats of contemporary artists such as Neo Rausch and the New Leipzig painters, David Salle, Mark Tansey, Mamma Andersson, and others. The class will work through this broad range of subject matter with the aim of fostering an individual mode of expression, be it ambiguous or disjunctive realism, implied, hybrid or fractured narrative, or invented and fantastical scenarios.
CSPT 238 Painting: Beyond the Basics 1.5 credits Dorothy Valakos $585

Section A Meets 2/19/2013 to 4/30/2013 on Tuesday from 6:15 PM to 10:00 PM.

This course is geared to intermediate painters who have some comfort with the medium and seek a more personal direction for their work. Beginning with a brief review of materials and methods, this course provides ongoing customized projects for each student, supplemented by the stimulus of regular group and individual critiques, slide lectures and discussions. Participants will explore the practice of painting in a series, with consideration given to issues of size, theme, media, technique and other criteria necessary to produce an integrated body of work. As students gain familiarity and insight into their own ways of working, they will be encouraged to deepen and extend their ideas in order to develop more meaningful subject matter and strengthen their formal and conceptual vocabularies. There are no restrictions on medium, form, subject or style. Prerequisite: CSPT 102A Learning to Paint or equivalent. Note: Participants should bring at least three examples of their work and all painting supplies to the first class meeting.
