Location: St. Paul's School. Grades 3-5. Do you love to draw and wish to learn how to draw what you see more realistically? This course is an exciting balance of learning how to see and how to capture contours, apply tones, and develop shading to make objects 'pop' off the page. With the basic understanding that in order to draw well, one must first learn how to see, students are engaged in fun looking exercises that challenge them to use their eyes and minds to collect information about the objects, people, and places around them. They will discover how to see the world in a fresh, new way! Different approaches, tools, materials and techniques are presented and explored using a diverse range of media, from pen and pencil to color explorations in pastel and paint.

Location: St. Paul's School. Grades 3-5. In this course, students explore a variety of art-forms that involve movement. They design and construct kites, create mobiles, and assemble other art objects that flap, spin, fly, flutter and move. A variety of construction techniques are combined with drawing/decorating techniques as students explore the potential of their ideas in creating both two-dimensional and three-dimensional kinetic art-forms. The beautiful campus at St. Paul's provides the perfect venue for kite-flying and more.

Location: St. Paul's School. Grades 1-2.Do you have a knack for putting together unusual materials to create interesting three-dimensional objects? In this hands-on, multi-media sculptural course, students use additive techniques to attach, glue, twist, stack, tie, dangle and arrange as they explore the ways varied materials can be combined to create expressive forms that may be artful, functional or both. Materials such as found objects, wood, paper and board are used for construction of these innovative sculptures, then they are embellished with a variety of natural and man-made materials. Students are encouraged to use their own artful thinking to find and bring in interesting objects and materials for use in this course.

Throughout its long history, the art of cartooning has provided a wonderful means for people to express their opinions and ideas, entertain one another, bring forth laughter, and take amazing flights of fantasy. In this course, students learn how cartoonists develop their ideas, put together a unique persona of traits and physical features, and create the personality and appearance of an original cartoon character. Students learn the basic elements of drawing cartoon bodies, capturing expression through exaggeration, developing props, and writing dialog for short cartoon strips and one-panel cartoons featuring their original character.

For the student who loves to paint, this course is designed to help students refine their skills in observing color, making purposeful choices about color, and painting from life. Students will experiment with acrylics, temperas and watercolors as they learn to mix cohesive color palettes and apply both realistic and expressive color to their pieces. Works from past and contemporary artists will be used to emphasize the incredible diversity of styles and expressiveness that can be achieved with color.

Location: St. Paul's School. Grades 9-12. In this course, students hone observational drawing skills using a variety of 2-D media and specific subject matter such as still-life set-ups, objects, natural forms, and the surrounding landscape and/or cityscape. Students learn numerous skills and techniques for representational drawing by focusing on and capturing what they see using value, shading and contrast to create a sense of form. Composition is emphasized as students make purposeful decisions about how to organize space within a 2-dimensional picture plane.
NCSP 313 Portfolio Preparation: Oil Painting Techniques (grades 9-12) 0 credits - TBA $330

Location: St. Paul's School. Grades 9-12. For students who have experience drawing from life and would like to learn more about the unique qualities of oil paint. Used as the primary medium throughout the history of painting, the versatility, and richness of oil paint have allowed artists to capture moments in time, events, and likenesses in ways that no other medium can. students work primarily from life using a combination of still-life, portrait, and landscape to develop skills in utilizing cohesive color schemes using specific oil painting techniques - underpainting, glazing, smooth application of color, impasto. Note: Students will use solvents in this course. Due to the use of oil pigments, a materials fee for this course will apply.
