Grades 2-4. For the young artist who loves to draw. In this fast-paced course, students create drawings from memory, observation, imagination, and in response to the art of master artists. Different approaches, tools, materials, and techniques are explored using a range of media, including pen, pencil, pastel, and paint. With each new medium and technique, students create studies and sketches as preparation for several refined pieces for the final exhibition. Emphasis is on exposure to a variety of traditional and on-traditional media and surfaces, with hands-on process, work, and experimentation at the heart of learning each new technique or medium. Grades 4-6. Fabrics in rich colors, textures and patterns can be found in every part of the world. The tactile qualities of each type of material make fibers and fabrics a medium that lends itself to layering, combining, bending, stitching and folding. With swatches of varied fabrics as 'paint', and a rich array of yarn, string and other fibers as 'lines', students in this course create collage, fabric decoupage, embellishment with stitchery, fabric pattern-making, and much more. Art forms such as quilting, applique, and embroidery, used throughout history for artful functional objects, are used as inspiration.

Grades 2-4.This course offers students an exciting opportunity to be both creator and performer in a dramatic artistic endeavor. Students explore a variety of 3-D processes as they create objects, puppets, masks, and other 3-D forms that can be incorporated into an original narrative. In addition to generating ideas and creating characters, students learn how props, voice, and movements can be used to tell a story. Emphasis is on creating a unique and expressive language of object, gesture, and story, with equal attention given to the artistic/visual qualities of the art objects themselves and the purposeful use
of these objects in student-designed performances. Inspiration for each art object will be derived from a variety of places and artists, from the shadow plays of India to the contemporary object work of Hannah Tierney.

In this course students will have repeated experiences with the fully expressive medium as they discover various kinds of paint, multiple tools for applying wet media and investigating different surfaces. This course is about the process yet undoubtedly will have special value to the children as it will be a means for vivid representation of their innermost ideas and feeling.

Grades 1-2. Drawing is a natural mode of communication that children rarely resist. It can be a wonderful way for all children to become creative regardless of their educational level. In this course children will have multiple encounters with drawing that include mark making, creating sketches, diagrams, and images that are completed art works. These encounters will focus on media exploration by working with various drawing tools and personal expression of themes that relate directly to their experiences and lives. Noting that observational drawing is not the only form of good drawing practice, children in this course will have opportunities to work observation and recollection as well as expanding drawing vocabularies by working from memory and imagination as a means of creative expression of ideas and feelings.

Working with their ?travel companions?, students collaborate with classmates to select the places to which they will journey, creating art along the way. From Mexican bark-painting, African masks, South American patterns and much, much more, students will create art inspired by the styles and materials of other places.

Grades 6-8. From wire and wood sculpture to clay, plaster, and carved forms, this course is for the student who thinks in three dimensions. Students combine a mixture of additive and subtractive techniques to create sculptures that may be large or small, smooth or rough, uniform or multi-colored, individual or collaborative. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Brancusi, Moore, Nevelson, and many more, students think about the way sculpture can convey a likeness, repeat forms, express a concept or emotion, and utilize space in visually interesting ways. Emphasis is on sculptures as artful 3-D objects that can be viewed from all sides, with a form and surface treatment that are cohesive and expressive of the students' ideas and vision.

Students learn the basic elements of drawing cartoons, developing dialog, and creating sequences to express personally meaningful narratives.

Grades 6-8. Beginning with an understanding of compositional principles and the basic function of the digital camera, students learn to create and print digital images. As the course progresses, the class explores the Adobe Photoshop program as a tool to refine images and explore options in manipulating imagery for expressive purposes. This course takes place in a Macintosh graphics lab and on-site around campus to take photos. Students will be required to take images in class as well as capture images outside of class for use on the computer. NOTE: students must bring their digital cameras to each class.

In this course, the designer is you. Grades 9-12. People from every part of the world use vessels and holding forms for utilitarian, decorative, and ritual purposes. Holding forms can be repositories for collections, treasures, and writings, and they can take many three-dimensional forms. Journals and sketchbooks can be holding forms for ideas and sketches, while bowls, boxes, and other ceramic forms can be holding forms for important objects. For inspiration, students look at the art and artifacts that different cultures have created as holding forms. They then find creative ways to ‘hold’ their own experiences, memories, and narratives in a variety of three-dimensional holding forms created in class.
