
Links for subscription databases below work from computers on-campus. REMOTE ACCESS SYSTEM: To access databases from off-campus, go to the Remote Access page. From that page, click on any database link, then enter your MICA user name and password (same as My MICA Portal log-in). The log-in will take you directly to the selected database for searching. ARTstor ARTstor has more than 300,000 digital images that can be magnified for greater detail. Most of the images represent the canon of Art History.
How to use: Click on Search & Browse For Images on the right side of the page. Click on Advanced Search at the top and then once again from the drop down menu that appears. Enter search terms in the first box on the left. Use the drop-down menu on the right to choose a search of the title field or the creator field. The default search of "in any field" will search such fields as material, repository, site, culture, etc. Additional search terms can be added using the boxes directly underneath. The drop-down menus to the left of those search boxes allow the use of Boolean operators (And, Or, Not). Double-click an image from the results page for a bigger size or double-click a caption for more information on the image.
Corbis Education Corbis Education offers 620,000 digital images available for downloading at three levels of resolution. The Corbis watermark appears on each image until it is downloaded. For access to this database, obtain the MICA subscription code from the Media Resources Collection or the Decker Library Reference Desk, then use the code to create a user account at the site (you will need to use an "@mica.edu" email address as a user name). You can register from any location, and can log-in to use the database from any location. The subscription code changes each year. Continuing Studies students can use a group account that has been created for them - inquire at the Decker Library or Media Resources Collection.
How to use: Use the search box at top left and enter search terms. Once a set of results appears, click on "Info & Download". Options for downloading and suggested keywords for expanding your search will appear. Image thumbnails can be selected, enlarged for closer viewing, and added to your Download Folder. When you are ready to download, click "Proceed to Download". Images can be downloaded individually, as JPG files, or all at once, in which case they are delivered to you as a ZIP file for which you will need an application like StuffIt (MAC) or WinZip (Windows) to open.
Dover Art Series This is a searchable visual index to Dover Art series books held in the Decker Library. It contains ~125 titles, with 2 images for each book.
How to use: Use the drop down menu to the left of the search box to choose how a Dover title will be searched. Use "Contains" to search any combination of letters or words that may be in the title or "Starts with" to search for the word or letters at the beginning of a title. The "check availability" link next to each call number allows you to quickly view the book's Decker Library catalog record to see if the book is currently available.
Grove Art Online Grove Art Online provides web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art and The Oxford Companion to Western Art. There are over 1,500 thumbnail art images and line drawings displayed in the context of articles, plus extensive image links.
How to use: Click on "Search Image Links" and enter any combination of artist's name, title words, date, or location. The ranked results list is a set of links to websites. Once there, an additional search may be required. Browse the article illustrations in Grove Art Online by clicking "Art Image Collections" and then "Illustrated Articles."
Art Museum Image Gallery The Art Museum Image Gallery has over 96,000 images of art from international museum sources. Each image is fully described and is rights-cleared for educational use. It has excellent coverage of 20th Century Art.
How to use: Use the drop-down menu to the right of the search box to make the search more specific. Choose Title if some title words are known and Artist if the artist is known.
Art Full Text Use Art Full Text to find images that appear on the pages of art-related journals.
How to use: Select Art Reproduction from the "Document Type" drop-down menu and Title from the search drop-down menu. Type the subject or title words in the search box and click Start.
Academic Search Premier This database has thousands of images, many of which are taken from journalistic archives. You can find a picture of just about anything and anyone, but don't expect to find much artwork.
How to use: Click on Images tab for search screen dedicated to images. Simply enter a word or words in the search box and click Search. Use Boolean operators such as "And" and "Or" to narrow or broaden your search.
Media Resources Collection (log-in required). Use this database to search the more than 215,000 slides available in MICA's Media Resources Collection. You can view the slides in the MRC, or borrow them to view elsewhere.
How to use: Click search for slides then Advanced Search. Select Title or Subject from the drop-down menu and enter the title or subject words. Click Display Results.
