Project Overview
The Baltimore Art + Justice Project is administered by MICA's Office of Community Engagement with support from the Open Society Foundation in New York City.
Vision
The Art + Justice Project believes that a better, more just Baltimore can be achieved by identifying, strengthening and supporting collaboration between artists, arts organizations and social change advocates in Baltimore.
Mission
The Art + Justice Project will identify, and connect artists, arts organizations and social change advocates in Baltimore. The project also seeks to help shape a national dialogue on the role of art as a tool for justice in communities.
Objective
The Art + Justice Project will facilitate a community-centered process of data collection that will enable the city of Baltimore to map and better understand its arts-based social justice tools and strategies. The project will lay the groundwork for the creation of web-based resources for use by artists, advocates, philanthropists and others who are interested in collaborating through art to advance a social justice agenda in Baltimore.
Strategy
The mission of the Art + Justice Project will be achieved through five program components: 1) Governance; 2) Community Dialogue and Outreach; 3) Data Collection and Analysis; 4) Visualization and Storytelling; and 5) Documentation and Process Evaluation.
Governance
The activities of Art+ Justice are executed by the Project Coordinator and are governed by an Advisory Committee made up artist, advocates, funders and researchers who inform the process.
Community Dialogue and Outreach
Community meetings, in-depth interviews, town hall events, cyber gatherings and forums will be used to promote the project and strengthen collaboration among artist and advocates.
Data Collection and Analysis
An Art + Justice survey will collect data on artists, art organizations and art projects in Baltimore.
Visualization and Storytelling
Data collected will be mapped by zip code and neighborhood, providing a view of Baltimore's arts based assets. Additionally, artists will be able to make their personal case for art as social change through storytelling and sharing resources.
Documentation
The Art+ Justice Project will be documented by capturing written, audio and visual media throughout the length of the project so that it can be replicated in other cities.
Evaluation
The Art +Justice Project will evaluate the success of the project through storytelling, case studies and the development of a best practices tool kit for using data and art as a tool for social justice.
