Art inspires other people to get involved. 

With a Fulbright to Turkey in the field of performance art, alumna Ellyn Stokes '10 (printmaking) has studied traditional Turkish shadow puppetry under puppeteer Hasan Huseyin Karabag, of the organization Istanbul Katibim Karagoz Evi, and in puppetry classes at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts.

Stokes has also won a Critical Language Enhancement Award, which will bring her to the host country early for an additional period of intensive language study. Ultimately, through her project Karagõz and Hacivat: Bridging Cultures Through Traditional Shadow Puppetry, Stokes wants to create original shadow puppet shows as a vehicle of cultural exchange between the United States and Turkey.
