Students with little or no background in jewelry making can enter the program, as well as those looking to upgrade their skills. The certificate is awarded after completion of 26 credits (12 credits of required Foundation-level courses, 4 credits of advanced-level courses and 10 credits of electives) taken through the School for Professional and Continuing Studies program. All courses must be taken for a letter grade. Students must complete the total number of required credits at MICA to be awarded a MICA certificate. Students must complete the previous certificate option or have the equivalent experience to enter into the next certificate option.
Required Foundation Courses
Students entering the Certificate in Jewelry program must complete the following six required Foundation courses (Classes may be taken in any order, except for CSJE 108 Introduction to Art Jewelry, which should be taken at the beginning of the program, and CSJE 301 Advanced Jewelry Studio, which should be taken at the end) prior to progressing to the advanced-level requirements:

Required Mid-Level Review
After the completion of the first six requirements, students are required to appear before a review committee which will ascertain their progress to determine if the students are ready to advance to the required advanced-level courses.
Required Advanced-Level Courses
Once approved by the mid-level review committee, students may progress to the following two required courses:

Electives
Students must take a total of 10 elective credits to complete the certificate requirements.
Electives should be chosen in consultation with an advisor to ensure that they meet the student's educational needs.

Kirsten Rook has been faculty in the Certificate in Jewelry program since 1995. She has also been the studio manager for MICA's Jewelry Center since 1991. She received her BFA from MICA and completed an apprenticeship at Hopkins Silversmithing after receiving her degree. Learn More »
