DRAW, PAINT, MAKE:For young artists who aren't afraid to immerse themselves in making large-scale, messy, and creatively wonderful works of art, this course combines 2D drawing and 3D building in innovative ways. Using imagination, memory, and observation, students engage in media explorations to produce colorful, expressive 2D pieces. These pieces are then combined, collages, and constructed to make final compositions that are beyond the ordinary! WHAT DO YOU SEE?:Get ready to see the world in a whole new way! This course offers the child a variety of exciting art experiences based upon explorations of his/her immediate world. The child-artists are encouraged to explore the world through experiencing texture, color, line, and shape through use of movement, touch, and sight. Using a variety of drawing media, the child translates his/her world through expressive mark-making and line. From very small to very large drawings, individual work to collaborative murals, this course will open up a world of possibilities.

SCHEDULE INCLUDES -- Before Care 8:00 - 9:30 am; Morning Course: Innovative Drawing Techniques 9:30 am - 12 noon; Supervised Lunch 12 noon - 1:00 pm; Afternoon Course: Expressive Sculpture 1:00 - 3:30 pm; After Care 3:30 - 6:00 pm. INNOVATIVE DRAWING TECHNIQUES: Description to follow. EXPRESSIVE SCULPTURE:Puppetry and expressive masks have served as a traditional intersection between the visual arts and theater. Puppets are powerful symbols that bring characters to life, tell stories, transmit cultural traditions or provide comic pleasure. Similarly, masks have long been used by different people from around the world as a means of expressing and celebrating ideas and events important to their culture. In this course, students select from a variety of media to construct puppets and masks to tell personal stories. Half art-making and half collaboration and performance, this course provides students with a unique venue for expressing both visually and through dramatic performance.

DRAWING FROM IMAGINATION AND OBSERVATION: In this course, students hone perceptual and observational drawing skills using a variety of 2-D media and specific subject matter such as still-life set-ups, objects, natural forms, and the surrounding landscape. Students learn skills and techniques for realistic rendering by focusing on and capturing what they see using value, shading and contrast to create a sense of form, Composition is emphasized as students make purposeful decisions about how to organize space within a picture plane. SCHEDULE INCLUDES -- Before Care 8 Grades 9-12. ART STUDIO 1 AND 2: Set up like a college studio course, this all-day studio workshop begins with a review of students’ current interests, with discussion about student’s aspirations for growing in specific artistic areas. Work is primarily 2-dimensional and spans a wide range of both wet and dry media, from pencil and charcoal to paint. This course emphasizes skills development and development of the creative thought process. Students keep a reflective journal and sketchbook as they identify areas to strengthen in their artwork. Beginning with a series of studies and exercises in the morning, students also work independently with the instructor to develop and plan for tailored art problems which they then explore and develop in the afternoons.
