This three-week program offers 3 studio credits in art history, with an optional 3 credits in humanistic studies. Classes may be taken for undergraduate and graduate credit or audit. The program is open to undergraduate or graduate students (rising sophomores to second-year graduate students), and to lifelong learners at least 18 years of age who have completed at least one year of college study. All students must have a current, valid passport for travel.
This summer, attend the 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art in Berlin, Germany, while you learn about and experience the rich culture and history of this vibrant city. Also travel to Documenta13 in Kassel, the world-renowned exhibition that happens once every five years! In the art history course, "Art in Berlin After 1989", you will consider avant-garde art and design in Berlin since the reunification of East and West Germany. You will visit artist studios, have insider discussions with critics and curators of contemporary art, see work in local galleries, and attend lectures and sites associated with the Biennale. Learning about the exciting history of the avant-garde scene in Berlin since German reunification, you will explore the architecture, museums, bookstores, theaters, and cafes that have fostered this city's dynamic culture. Sites to be visited include Kunst Werke, Hamburger Bahnhof, the Hebel Theatre, and the Stasi Museum. Guest lectures by MICA faculty and faculty residing Berlin on various topics on German culture will round out the experience.
This program is open to all majors.
PROGRAM FEES
Airfare is not included in the program fees below, which include all accommodations, all field trips, and some meals:
- $5,500 includes tuition for 3 undergraduate studio credits in art history
- $7,000 includes tuition for 3 undergraduate studio credits in art history+ 3 undergraduate credits in humanistic studies (as an independent study by special arrangement with the MICA Department of Humanistic Studies)
Graduate credit is available to qualified students with the approval of the Program Coordinator at an additional cost of $50 per credit. A limited number of merit and need-based scholarships may be available, contingent on the continued availability of gift and grant funding. FACULTY
T'ai Smith holds a Ph.D. in Visual & Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester. She has been a full-time faculty member in MICA's department of Art History, Theory & Criticism since 2006, where she has taught "Modernism & After," "Graduate Survey of Contemporary Art, Design, and Theory," "History of Graphic Design," and several seminars on issues in modern and contemporary art and design history. She has published articles and reviews in various periodicals, including Grey Room, Art Journal, Journal of Modern Craft, and Texte zur Kunst, and catalogue essays for the Museum of Modern Art, New York. She is currently completing a book manuscript, entitled Writing On Weaving: Bauhaus Theory for a Medium-Specific Craft, which considers theoretical writing on craft and media by weavers, artists, and designers at and after the Bauhaus school in Germany. She is currently the chair of MICA's department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism.
