What is the Intensive English Program for Artists?
The Intensive English Program (IEP) for Artists is a special course for new MICA students who are non-native speakers of English. The IEP is held before the beginning of the fall semester. The program combines advanced language instruction with studio drawing, trips and other activities that will help you improve your communication skills and be successful in MICA's studio and academic classes.
The IEP has two parts, Studio Drawing and Language of Artists. Studio Drawing closely resembles a typical MICA studio class. It is a relaxed environment where you can develop your ability to use art vocabulary, speak about your own artwork, and participate in critiques and class discussions. Trips to Baltimore museums and galleries will offer additional opportunities to practice your English in different social and practical settings.
Language of Artists provides intensive English instruction in a traditional classroom setting. Coursework will focus on topics of interest to art students and will include guest lectures from visiting artists. Language of Artists will enrich your reading, composition, listening and speaking skills and help you adjust to the academic culture of the U.S. and MICA.
The Intensive English Program for Artists takes place from July 25-August 15, 2012. IEP students move in to MICA campus housing between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM on Tuesday, July 24. (early move in can't be accommodated). The first meeting will begin at 6pm, July 24 and includes a pizza dinner. IEP classes begin on Wednesday, July 25 and end on Wednesday, August 15. Details will follow after registration. Classes are held for six hours each day, five days per week. After the IEP, all new international students at MICA will begin MICA's international student orientation program.
Housing and Meals
All IEP students are required to live in MICA campus housing during the entire program. Housing is apartment-style and is designed to accommodate the needs of art students. Students will be placed in single rooms. Meals will be provided during the entire program. You will move out of your room on August 16th at 12pm. If you have signed up for MICA housing, you will move into your permanent room at this time.
