What is the Intensive English Program for Artists?
The Intensive English Program (IEP) for Artists is a special course for new MICA students who are non-native speakers of English. The IEP is held before the beginning of the fall semester. The program combines advanced language instruction with studio drawing, trips and other activities that will help you improve your communication skills and be successful in MICA's studio and academic classes.
The IEP has two parts, Studio Drawing and Language of Artists. Studio Drawing closely resembles a typical MICA studio class. It is a relaxed environment where you can develop your ability to use art vocabulary, speak about your own artwork, and participate in critiques and class discussions. Trips to Baltimore museums and galleries will offer additional opportunities to practice your English in different social and practical settings.
Language of Artists provides intensive English instruction in a traditional classroom setting. Coursework will focus on topics of interest to art students and will include guest lectures from visiting artists. Language of Artists will enrich your reading, composition, listening and speaking skills and help you adjust to the academic culture of the U.S. and MICA.
