Leah Harper

MA, Social Design

Class of 2012

As the daughter of a graphic designer and dentist, Leah Harper's '12 exposure to art began at an early age while playing with Prismacolor markers and etching designs into discs of dental plaster. Born in Cape Coral, Florida, and living in all corners of the U.S., from New York to Alaska, Harper first studied architecture. She earned a BArch from the University of Miami, and later worked in several architectural and urban design studios.

In 2011, Harper enrolled in the MA in Social Design program and soon launched an initiative that will benefit the community in East Baltimore for years to come. Social Design students study and work at MICA PLACE in East Baltimore, and Harper, along with classmate Remy Peritz '12, were awarded a grant to provide free professional portraits to families in the area who otherwise not be able to pursue or afford them.

According to Harper, many families expressed how rare it is for them to have the opportunity to get such photos. And, since the bulk of supplies was purchased with the grant, other Social Design students will be able to continue to provide the service.
