Jennifer Coster '12 grew up in a suburb of Washington, DC, and spent time there, and in Chicago and LA while pursuing artistic and academic opportunities. She earned her MFA from MICA's Rinehart School of Sculpture
A 2012 Baker Award nominee for her body of work, Coster also received a $10,000 LAB (Launch Artists in Baltimore) prize that will support Print/Collect, Coster's quarterly hand-screened print collection of works by Baltimore artists. Fashioned similarly to a zine, the product will feature three artists' hand-screened prints in each rendition. Print/Collect aims to help emerging artists promote themselves through a new platform to showcase work, while offering buyers accessible and affordable artwork, and showcasing the contemporary Baltimore art scene. The LAB awards go to new MICA graduate alumni pursuing initiatives in Baltimore.
Of her work, Coster has said, "My studio work investigates my wonder at and lack of understanding of the grand systems that make up our world. I look at how humans relate to their animal selves, as well as the gestures and activities that provide a sense of identity. My work will often be time based, use metaphor and have a political undertone. I am interested in continuing to make work for a gallery setting as well as explore options of social practice."
Coster received a BA in History at the University of Southern California before attending MICA. Selected exhibitions include First Year Show, Pinkard Gallery, and Little Decisions Big Outcome at Gallery 500, both in Baltimore, and Insectology at Goucher College, Towson, MD. Residencies have included Ox-Bow Summer Artist Residency, Saugatuck MI, Grandview Residency, Hollandale, WI, and a Printmaking Fellowship at Pyramid Atlantic, Silver Spring, MD.
