Youngmi Song '02 was born in Korea and studied traditional oriental painting since she was 15. She received her BFA at Chunnam University in Kwangju, Korea. In 1996, she came to United States of America for her studies. In 2002 she received her MFA from Mount Royal School of Art at MICA.
With an interest in everyday contemporary life, Youngmi uses every tool imaginable to create art. Her work reflects her understanding of what it means to live by carefully depicting thought processes through the geometrical shapes of her drawings.
End to End, a solo exhibition of her work, was at MICA's Pinkard Gallery in 2011. She has also had solo exhibitions at at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, at the School 33 Art Center in Baltimore, and at Montage Gallery in Baltimore. Her work has appeared in numerous group shows, including Select: WPA/Corcoran 2003 Art Auction, at the Corcoran Museum in Washington DC, the Member's Juried Exhibition at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Willimington, Delaware, New at the Rockville Arts Place in Rockville, Maryland, Art Basel in Miami Florida, Multiplicity, Gallery Four in Baltimore and Academy, and Conner Contemporary Art Gallery in Washington DC.
She currently teaches Sumi Ink Painting and The Coloration of Asian Painting at MICA, as well as Drawing I and 2 at George Mason University.
