Become a significant voice in critical discourse on art and culture. The critical analysis, evaluation, and discussion of art and culture is often how most people become aware of important innovation and development in the field. The MA in Critical Studies degree provides a pathway to professional practice or further study at the doctoral level through an in-depth grounding in critical theory and analysis.

Critical Studies (MA)

Meet Our Alumni

Jess Bither

A double major in art history and English from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Jessica Bither '13 came to MICA after working as an administrative intern at the Arlington Arts Center (AAC) in Arlington, Virginia. She looked to MICA's MA in Critical Studies program as a way to expand her horizons and bridge her interests in art and academics. While at the College, she discovered material and peers who challenged and changed the way she thinks.

"I wanted to find a program that would combine my two main interests: writing and art. When I was an undergraduate student, I longed for cohesion between the Art History and English departments. At MICA, there was exciting dialogue occurring between art history and writing in the Critical Studies program. The material was quite challenging. At times, I felt like I was doing mental acrobatics, stretching in ways I didn't know I could. The program is intimate, but this makes it easy to form strong bonds. My peers and I were constantly reading each other's work. I have added so many layers to the way I think, and I can thank my peers for that."
