Facilities and Resources

Students in this program have access to an array of resources at both MICA and JHU. The historic Globe Poster Collection and expanded print facility at MICA, offers the opportunity to learn about traditional printing practices as well as how to employ contemporary methods to preserve similar materials and collections. JHU's George Peabody Library consists of more than 300,000 volumes from the 18th and 19th century, as well as 3,000 rare books and manuscripts from the 14th through the 17th centuries, and travel journals and large maps housed in the Rare Books and Manuscript seminar room. JHU's extensive facilities for book and paper conservation are also available to all students in the program. These resources along with other rich paper collections provide the groundwork of the program and research opportunities for students.

Who Should Apply

The MFA in Book and Paper Conservation is suited for visual artists and designers with an interest in translating their existing skills and knowledge to the conservation field, and for professionals in areas where book and paper conservation is applied.

Candidates will come from diverse backgrounds, including fine art and design, as well as working professionals with specializations in archival or library sciences and related scientific fields.
