Advanced Strategies for Teaching Art I

Offered summer. This course is taken in the first summer residency. Students solve studio-based problems and initiate investigations related to contemporary theory and practice in the field of art education; examine application of strategies to their classroom settings; and reflect on connections to the questions shaping their classroom research study.

Contemporary Issues in Art I

Offered summer. This seminar introduces students to contemporary issues in the visual arts with an emphasis on the transition from modernist to post-modernist approaches to art practice. Students attend each of the presentations in MICA's invited-artist lecture series and make connections to their own studio practice and art teaching practice.

Studio Investigations I

Offered Summer. This studio course is offered in the first summer residency. Engaging a variety of media and working concepts, students begin to identify and explore a visual art problem of personal interest through preparatory research for and production of a related series of artworks. Studio instructors mentor students' individual progress. Group critiques are scheduled throughout the course. Students are encouraged to reflect on connections between this course and possible questions shaping their classroom research investigations.

Offered summer. Drawing upon new approaches to art making and new teaching strategies explored in the MAAE summer program, students learn how to design and conduct a study in their own classroom.

Study Group II

Offered fall. Using online discussion board formats and video chat services, students engage in bi-weekly group discussions with their instructor as they begin to implement the study they designed during their summer residency on MICA's campus.

Readings in Art Education: Contemporary Contexts

Offered fall.  In this seminar, students examine contemporary literature in art education and look closely for ways this scholarship relates to the questions they are examining in their own research studies.

Online Studio I

In response to monthly online assignments, students build digital portfolios of images, reflections, artists’ works, and readings that enrich their understanding of the art problem they began investigating in their summer studio. Regular online group meetings with the mentor maintain the dialogue among peers.

Winter Seminar: Action Research Review

Offered winter. Over Martin Luther King weekend, students return to MICA’s campus to meet with program faculty and an invited guest researcher to examine the implementation and initial findings of their in-process research studies.

Winter Seminar: Online Studio Review

Offered winter. Students meet with their online studio instructor and peers to examine their in-process digital portfolios developed during the fall semester to discuss ways to further develop emerging visual themes.

Study Group III

Offered spring. Students conclude their classroom research study by identifying findings and reflecting on the insights they have gained. They generate a proposal for presenting their study at a national conference.

Offered spring. In this seminar, students examine how the purposes of art education were represented in the early to later parts of the twentieth century. Students look closely for connections between earlier theoretical contexts and their own research studies.

Offered summer. Based on the study conducted over the course of the year, students write an article for publication in a peer-juried art education journal. Selected readings from the article are presented before the faculty, peers, and first-year students.

Studio Investigations II

Offered summer. In the second summer residency, studio faculty continues to mentor students to further develop, unify, and complete the series of artworks begun the previous summer. During the last week of the program, an exhibition of the students’ completed body of work celebrates the conclusion of studio investigations.

Contemporary Issues in Art II

Offered summer. In the second summer, this seminar deepens consideration of contemporary art practice and its potential to validate, inform, and engage today’s students. The artist lecture series enriches the conversation in which students are encouraged to make connections with their own studio practice and their teaching.

Professional Development Seminar

Offered summer. In this professional development seminar, art education faculty guide students in identifying next steps in their professional careers. Studio artists and artist-educators with national and regional reputations are invited to make presentations to the class on strategies that have successfully served their own career development.

MAAE Thesis

Offered summer. Through group meetings and individual conferences, students develop a formal presentation synthesizing new learning from studio investigations, strategies for making and teaching art, and conducting a classroom study. The thesis presentation is the culminating event in the program.
