Johnson. Offered summer. Drawing upon new approaches to art-making and new teaching strategies explored in the MAAE summer program, students learn how to conduct an action research study in their own classroom.
Studio Investigations I

Cloutier. Offered Summer. This studio course is offered in the first summer residency. Engaging a variety of media and working concepts, students begin to identify and explore a visual art problem of personal interest through preparatory research for and production of a related series of art works. Studio instructors mentor students' individual progress. Group critiques are scheduled throughout the course. Students are encouraged to reflect on connections between this course and possible questions shaping their classroom research investigations.
Advanced Strategies for Teaching Art I

McKenna. Offered summer. This course is taken in the first summer residency. Students solve studio-based problems and initiate investigations related to contemporary theory and practice in the field of art education; examine strategies for effectively adapting art problems and inquiry to their classroom settings; and, reflect on connections to the questions shaping their classroom research study.
Contemporary Issues in Art I

Mann. Offered summer. This seminar introduces students to contemporary issues in the visual arts with an emphasis on the transition from modernist to the post-modernist approaches to art making. Students attend each of the presentations in MICA's invited-artist lecture series and make connections to their own studio practice and teaching.

Johnson. Offered spring. In the spring semester, students conclude their classroom research and begin to write an article that presents the findings of their study. Strong emphasis is placed on creative writing skills that convey a sense of the setting and individuals that shaped the research study.
Readings in Art Education: Historical Context

McKenna. Offered spring. In this seminar, students examine how the purposes of art education were represented in the early to later parts of the twentieth century. Students look closely for connections between earlier theoretical contexts and their own research studies.
Online Studio II

Cloutier. Offered spring. Students continue to work online with their instructor to build digital archives of images, reflections, artists' works, and readings that enrich the students' understanding of the art problems shaping their summer studio work.

Johnson. Offered summer. Students polish the draft of their research article written in the spring semester and submit it to a professional journal in the field of art education. Additionally, students submit a proposal for a presentation at the National Art Education Association based on the findings of their action research study.

Martin. Offered summer. In the second summer residency, studio faculty continues to mentor students to further develop, unify and complete the series of art works begun the previous summer. During the last week of the program, an exhibition of the students completed body of work celebrates the conclusion of the MAAE program.
Professional Development Seminar

In this professional development seminar, artist teachers make presentations on ways to successfully integrate an active studio life with an art education career. Strategies are presented for exhibition of artwork, applying for artist residencies, writing artists statements and other professional options of interests to seminar participants.
