Bachelor of Fine Arts/Master of Arts in Digital Art

Overview: The Master of Arts in Digital Arts program offers the oppor tunity to complete a BFA at MICA and spend one additional year pursuing intensive study in digital arts theory and studio practice. This immersive, professional experience attracts students from around the world. Graduates of the program emerge with polished skills in their area of focus—interactive design (CD-ROM, Web sites), animation, net.art, and digital video are all possibilities for your thesis project—as well as a professional digital portfolio.

What sets the MICA program apart from university-based, vocational, software-focused training programs is its setting in an exceptional art college environment. This enables the program to emphasize not only technical knowledge, but also the conceptual understanding and insights you will need to produce thoughtful, engaging, professional work in the medium. You work closely with internationally recognized faculty and visiting artists who are actively shaping the direction of thought and practice in this rapidly evolving field. This outstanding faculty also teaches courses at all levels, and electives for the MA are drawn from MICA’s impressive selection of existing digital courses.

Students entering the MA program are expected to have a firm grounding in digital media. An e-arts concentration at MICA is excellent preparation for this intensive master’s program. Your thesis project evolves through the 6-credit Studio/Thesis Seminar. In the fall, you craft your thesis project through discussions, readings, research, small projects, and work with visiting artists. In the spring, the seminar becomes a tutorial, marked by regular critiques by the program director, other students, and visiting artists as you pursue an intensive project of your own design.

MA in Digital Arts students have access to a dedicated, state-of-the-art Macintosh computer lab with high-quality facilities for video editing, sound editing, and scanning. Digital video editing is available on Macintosh G4 workstations; outstanding facilities are also available for sound recording and editing. Equipment available for check-out includes video and audio production equipment, high-end digital still cameras, and lighting kits.
