The MICA student chapter of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) will be in high spirits this coming March in New York City. Three members of the NAEA have won national awards recognizing exemplary leadership and service. Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) graduate students, Alder Keen '11 '12 and Sarah Damiano '11 '12, have been selected to receive the 2012 Higher Education Student Achievement Award at this year's conference. This is a huge achievement. The honor is normally awarded to only one student per year. However, Keen and Damiano demonstrated such a dedication to collaboration, they were co-nominated and co-awarded. Shyla Rao, Ed.D., faculty advisor to MICA's NAEASC and Graduate Co-Director of the MAT, will also be receiving a great honor. Shyla is this year's recipient of the NAEA's Student Chapter Sponsor Award of Excellence. These awards are not the first this group has won. Last May, the NAEASC was recognized by MICA as the "Student Organization of the Year."
Keen, Damiano and Rao will be presented with their national awards at the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Convention in New York City, New York, March 1-4. The focus of this year's NAEA National Convention will be "Emerging perspectives: Connecting Teaching, Learning, and Research."
