GAYPRIL is a month dedicated to several events and festivities concerning LGBTQ issues. The purpose of GAYPRIL is not only entertainment but also to educate students, faculty, staff, and the public about LGBTQ related issues and happenings.
We are kicking off the festivities with an Allies Night on April 1st inviting all people who identify as LGBTQ as well as all of our friends who support the community to join us during this month! We will also be hosting Drag Kickball to get us in gear for our last event of GAYPRIL, our DRAG BALL! This is the second annual drag ball, which is not only hosted by MICA but also Goucher University. There will be a contest for best King and Queen, food, prizes, and dancing.
Along with our many festivities we will also be having guest speakers to discuss specific issues. On April 8th student Lauren Pierce will be hosting "Asexuality 101" and on April 16th guest speaker Paz Galupo will be speaking to us about bisexuality. There will also be a screening of the oscar-winning film MILK directed by Gus Van Sant, which tells the story of important gay rights activist Harvey Milk.
On April 17th MICA, as well as many other universities and high schools across the nation, will be participating in the 13th annual Day of Silence, a day when we pay our respects to many of those in the LGBTQ community who are silenced and closeted and also the many victims of hate crimes. Throughout the day those who wish to participate will refrain from speaking until 7:30 at Cohen Plaza where we will break the silence by making lots of noise! Bring your voices, your instruments, and your pots and pans to help us break the silence!
Come and join us for our many events to celebrate GAYPRIL!
