MICA Faculty, Students and Alumni Present at the 2013 NAEA Convention

Gathering in Fort Worth, March 7-10, also honors BFA/MA in Teaching alum with major award

FORT WORTH--MICA faculty, staff, and students shared their knowledge and research with colleagues at the 2013 National Art Education Association (NAEA) Convention, the largest gathering of visual arts educators in the world. The theme of this year's convention, which took place March 7-10, was "Drawing Community Connections."

Members of the MICA community spoke on a number of topics at the annual gathering, including "Making Contemporary Art Accessible: Blogging, Art and the Classroom," "Middle School Art Students You Just Can't Reach? An Eighth-Grade Classroom Research Study Investigates Solutions," "Emerging narratives of the artist-researcher-teacher," and "Developing Independent Studio Thinking in an Honors Photography Class?"

Top Honor for MICA Alum
BFA/MA in Teaching alum, Juan Carlos Castro, Ph.D. '99/'00 was chosen by the National Art Education Association as the 2013 recipient of the Manuel Barkan Award.  Conceived as a tribute to Dr. Manuel Barkan, this award is presented
 to an individual who, through their published work in either Art Education or Studies in Art Education, has contributed a product of scholarly merit to the field of art education.
