MICA's Animation Department hosts a screening and Q&A with the director of Walt & El Grupo on Thursday, Sept. 23, 7 p.m. in Brown Center's Falvey Hall, 1301 W. Mount Royal Ave.
In 1941, President Roosevelt enlisted Walt Disney and his top animators, a crew to be nicknamed el grupo, to visit South America on a goodwill tour, hoping to counter the growing Fascist and National Socialist influence. In Walt & El Grupo, extensive interviews and archival footage recreate their diplomatic and creative mission, shot and directed by Ted Thomas, the son of Frank Thomas, a famous animator who was part of the trip.
Produced by Kuniko Okubo, who along with Ted Thomas will be on hand at MICA for the screening, the documentary chronicles the 10-week trip that Disney and his grupo took to Brazil, Argentina and Chile, using footage shot in five countries as well as personal letters and artwork from the trip.
