The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust
In 2007, support from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust provided MICA with the opportunity to offer a small number of full-ride scholarships to underrepresented students. In 2007 and 2008, five Gelman Scholars were selected for admission based on academic merit, artistic talent, and financial need with a preference for Latino students.
Providing increased access to higher education, the impact of scholarships cannot be underestimated. When MICA announced the availability of full-ride scholarships, applications from minority students increased 39% from the previous year. These statistics indicate that many talented students with high financial need were opting out of the college admissions process due to financial concerns. The Gelman Scholars program at MICA opens doors by providing talented and diverse students with real opportunities for a first-class, undergraduate art education.
The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust, located in New York, has a long history of supporting MICA programs, including the College’s Pre-College Studio Residency program, study abroad opportunities, and travel grants.
