A Profile in Arts & Activities Looks at the Influence of Dr. Al Hurwitz '41

Dr. Al Hurwitz '41, chair emeritus for art education

In a series called Art Teachers I Have Known by Jerome J. Hausman, MICA's chair emeritus in art education, Dr. Al Hurwitz '41, is honored through both narrative and accolades. Hausman, an art educator now teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago who worked with Hurwitz at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth years ago, recalls many splendid stories about his experiences with Hurwitz, including literally giving him the jacket off his back when Hurwitz's luggage was lost in Rotterdam just before the Queen of the Netherlands was to honor him.

In the article, Hausman honors Hurwitz, who retired to Martha's Vineyard to paint landscapes (influenced by King Kong) and write, saying he is "'Kong-like' in our field."
