James Kochalka ’91, Vermont's cartoonist laureate

James Kochalka '91 (Mount Royal School of Art) has been named Vermont's first cartoonist laureate. Kochalka, who draws the autobiographical daily comic American Elf, will heighten the profile of cartooning in Vermont during his three-year term, which begins March 10.

"A cartoonist laureate is the kind of thinking outside-the-box that Vermont supports. Cartooning promotes literacy and literature, two things we can't have enough of," stated Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin.
