The Maryland Artists Equity Foundation (MAEF) was incorporated in 1984 as a nonprofit foundation that sought to award scholarships to gifted young artists and encourage them to seek careers in the visual arts. In 2008, MAEF merged with Maryland Institute College of Art to enhance its fundraising and scholarship efforts. The MAEF at MICA scholarships are awarded to students from Maryland with financial need.
Leroy S. Applefeld Memorial Scholarship
Leroy S. Applefeld was a creative man who collected paintings, sculpture and coins. He made jewelry and loved both the performing, and fine arts. His eldest daughter continues the tradition as an art professor and multimedia artist. This scholarship was started in 1994 by Leroy's widow, Floraine Applefeld.
Baltimore Watercolor Society Scholarship
The Baltimore Watercolor Society (BWS) was started in 1885 and now has 500 members from the Mid-Atlantic region. Members are artists who create original works in water-based media. The BWS provides exhibits, workshops, lectures, and demonstrations for their members. BWS created this scholarship in 2003. Theresa & Abraham Clapman Scholarship
Theresa & Abraham Clapman had four children who loved to create art as children and continue to as adults. Two of them have developed careers as art educators and professional artists. As parents, Terri and Abe learned the importance of nurturing young artists. The Clapman Fund was created in 1998 under MAEF's stewardship. An annual scholarship competition was held from 1984 to 2008 to pick 25 finalists from over 100 applicants each year. In 2008 when MAEF merged with MICA, the Theresa & Abraham Clapman Scholarship became part of MICA's annual competitive scholarship competition.
Josh Fendell Pre-College Award
Josh Fendell, an artist and instructor who died in 1994, was memorialized by his wife Carol when she created the Josh Fendell Pre-College Award. The award helps a deserving young person from Baltimore City attend MICA's domestic Pre-College program. Josh taught the materials class at MICA for over 25 years, which was a required course for art education students. Scholarship winners who wish to learn more about Josh are encouraged to explore a copy of Xcerpts, which is available in MICA's Decker Library. Josh compiled Xcerpts, a series of resources to stimulate classroom discussion, over his 30 year teaching career.
Gensler Worldwide Architecture Scholarship

Dr. Ernesto Molfino Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship honors Dr. Ernesto Molfino, a respected surgeon, who passed away in 2007. The scholarship was created by Ernesto's wife, Susan, and is a fitting tribute from a family that understands the importance of the arts. The Molfino's son Gino earned two degrees at MICA--a BFA in General Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in Teaching. The Molfinos were active on MICA's Parent Council during Gino's undergraduate career, and Gino continues to excel today, recently winning a Fulbright Fellowship for international study.
Joseph Padgett Memorial Scholarship
Joseph Padgett was a MAEF Board member who helped many talented artists. This scholarship was started by his family and friends in 1999.
Amalie Rothschild '34 Scholarship
Amalie Rothschild '34 was an internationally recognized artist and MICA alumna. In 2003, her family established a memorial fund through the Baltimore Community Foundation, to support a scholarship through MAEF.
Robert L. Weinberg Scholarship
Robert L. Weinberg was a pre-eminent real estate attorney and active supporter of a wide range of arts, cultural, and civic institutions. His pro-bono legal advice assisted the founders of MAEF to obtain tax exempt status. His law firm, Saul Ewing, continues to advice MAEF. This scholarship was created in 2002 and supported by Bob's widow, Jan Weinberg.
