The Symposium will be structured as multiple series of short exemplary presentations followed by small break-out group discussions.
1. Presentations on Pedagogy
Faculty members or academic administrators from AICAD member schools are invited to propose short (10 - 12 minute) exemplary presentations on innovative pedagogical approaches or strategies that engage one of the themes and relevant questions articulated on the conference overview page. The emphasis will be on varieties of approaches, strategies large and small, and a spirit of sharing for the sake of stimulating discussion. Proposals could include examples of the successful use of newer delivery models such as online or hybrid course offerings or new angles or approaches to traditional components, e.g., revamping the critique or teaching a particular technique.
With the exception of the opening keynote panel on Thursday evening, a series of these kinds of presentations will begin each plenary segment of the conference on Friday and Saturday. Ideally, presentations should be direct and informal, i.e., not conceived as academic papers to be read but more as talks along the model of TED talks. They may include any and all technology -- power-point, video, sound, etc. -- that strengthens the clarity of the presentation.
2. Discussion Leaders/Provocateurs
Faculty members or academic administrators from AICAD member schools are also invited to lead a break-out session on one of the themes explored in the plenary sessions as well as the broader concerns of the break-out group. Volunteers for these roles should write to the conference organizers and provide a statement that describes the focus of the inquiry and the kinds of issues likely to be explored. Discussion leaders do not have to be expert in the topic at hand: the goal is to move participants into a space outside of collective comfort zones and familiarity. For the same reason, discussion leaders do not have to feel they have arrived at answers or conclusions around the selected theme and questions; a readiness to lead and engage is all that is necessary.
Preliminary indications of involvement are requested by Friday, May 10, 2013. CAO's and Presidents are also invited to participate, especially as discussion leaders. This preliminary deadline will provide a first scan of response and provide time to further fine tune areas of need.
Member schools are invited to indicate their interest in participating by going to the AICAD Conference website or by writing to the conference organizers (firstname.lastname@example.org).
