UNMARKED: Annual Benefit Fashion Show

Amadeus Guchhait '15 (general fine arts) - Gilded

Amadeus Guchhait

Amadeus Guchhait's line is a study on the reconciliation of opposites. Each ensemble is an amalgamation of elegance and irreverence, masculine and feminine, Western and Eastern, tailored and deconstructed. These disparate influences evoke the idea of a gilded age: a gleaming exterior belying a decaying interior, an image built upon the romanticization of (what was in actuality) a repressive and oppressive past and appropriation from colonized cultures. Ambiguity is an important concept, with blurred visions of gender, era, and culture providing the foundation for the exploration of traditional Western ideas on civilization, sex, race, and the definition of 'progress.'

Guchhait is an interdisciplinary artist and designer living in Ellicott City, Maryland. He learned to sew at a young age, and realizing his garment designs has been an important part of his practice ever since. The benefit fashion show marks his first time participating as a designer in a formal fashion event.
