Student Designers

The 19th Annual Benefit Fashion show, Transcend, is a runway show that will explore the outward manifestation of the unconscious mind. The designers were asked to go beyond the expected and Transcend their normal, accepted thought processes and reveal a hidden layer of themselves through their garment making.

Alexandra Giacobbe ‘12 and Jess Marx ‘12 - Mama Said

Mama Said is a line of garments inspired by a box of scrap materials handed down to Alexandra from her Great Grandmother Ruby. These scraps from the 50's and 60's seem much more precious than the common household objects that they came from, and she feels a responsibility to keep their memory alive. The garments constructed from these fabrics are based on iconic sewing patterns from the 1950's. Each look is highly exaggerated to dominate the garment and the wearer. This is especially expressed in the collection of hats and accessories. Though the basis of the line is recognizably derived from the 1940's to early 1960's, we are using our own memories and imagination to style each look in accordance with our false sense of nostalgia.
