Student Designers

At the annual Experimental Fashion Event, artists and designers from the Fiber Department’s Multi Media Event class transform 2640 (St. John’s Church) into a venue for innovative fashion and costume design by pushing the boundaries of fashion and art through live performances and projected video.

Michela Reina

Michela Reina is an Italian born Costume Designer and Artist who left Italy for America 13 years ago to follow her dream of film costuming. She is also a graduating senior at the Maryland Institute College of Art set to complete her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fibers with an Experimental Fashion concentration.

A lover of all things gloomy and grotesque, her collection is a manifestation of the melancholy literature of Edgar Allan Poe. It centers on her vision of reality and focuses on the tragic death of the beautiful women in his stories and poems, who are then catapulted into a Utopian world that transcends reality. With a flair for the dramatic and the dreary, she brings these characters into a place inspired by the Victorian and Edwardian era, as well as the steam punk movement. Through the use of draping techniques and altered period costume patterns she is able to create a series of unique theatrical garments and hats.
