As a recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) awards, Christy Chong was able to study abroad in Seoul, South Korea. While there, she had the chance to learn more about her heritage and identity as a first generation American in the United States whose parents are both Korean. Using her time in South Korea as inspiration, Chong’s line reflects the aesthetics of South Korea and her special bonds with different people and places. By sculpting two-dimensional materials into wearable attire and then translating these memories into patterns, garments and accessories, Chong has found a way to make art that not only reflects a combination of her interests but also encapsulates her memories made abroad.
