The Commons

The Commons are specifically designed with the needs of first-year students in mind. Surrounding a landscaped, grassy courtyard perfect for outdoor activities, our three-building, four-story apartment complex, the Commons, is intended especially for student artists. The Commons is home to 350 students and a four minute walk from the Main Building.

Former students have claimed time and time again that the environment isn’t just a community, but instead an interactive “family” of friends. Because of its size, the Commons continues to provide a community oriented atmosphere where students thrive and learn from one another and develop meaningful friendships that last a lifetime.

Housing at the Commons is apartment-style. Apartments are two, three, or four bedrooms, accommodating three to four students each. Each apartment also contains a living room, kitchen, and bathroom. This apartment style, designed especially for student artists are programmed to encourage the exploration of the foundation year and help to foster the overall community amongst foundation students.

The Commons is the ideal hall for any resident who prefers a more community-oriented atmosphere. This residence hall features a Gatehouse, a study lounge and social lounge completely furnished with tables, chairs, couches and furniture, creating a very comfortable social atmosphere.

The Commons Gatehouse serves as the “living room” for the residents of the Commons. It includes:

  • A 24-hour Desk that is the central point for information and safety & security concerns
  • A laundry/vending room that takes cash or MICARDs
  • Commons mail boxes
  • A lounge & gallery space

The Commons staff works along with student leaders on the MICA campus to provide a dynamic living and learning community of artists. Programs, or educational opportunities, provide a myriad of experiences for a complete education, from teaching life skills, to broadening the minds of students on social issues, to providing a compliment to the foundations experience. Students will find that living on campus is enriching for their overall learning experience at MICA. Our staff provides a safe and inclusive environment where learning, creating, and growing are things that happen inside our community of amazing resident artists. Staffing for the Commons includes one live-in Assistant Residential Coordinator, one Graduate Assistant for Residence Life, eight Residential Advisors, the 24-hour Desk Assistants, and the Office of Residence Life & Off-Campus Housing.
