The offices of Residence Life, Community Engagement, and Community Art and Service are pleased to present a unique and innovative on campus living option for our students with the new addition of a Special Interest Community (SIC) in the Gateway Residence Hall.
The Community Related Experiences in Art Through Engagement (CREATE) Special Interest Community at MICA will enhance the academic, civic, social, and residential experience for students and promote MICA's "philosophy that students learn best when developing thinking, questioning, and doing skills simultaneously" and that "by the end of their studies at MICA, students are expected to be able to work independently in their chosen medium, to collaborate with others, to communicate with others, and to have a global perspective". This Special Interest Community offers upperclassmen students, of various majors, the opportunity to engage in collaborative art projects in the baltimore area to increase their awareness of the power of art as a tool for change.
Students who participate in CREATE will gain unique opportunities to be involved in the community by participating in service projects, going on field trips to see examples of art that has positively impacted communities, and connecting with faculty. All of these opportunities are designed to improve students' collaboration, communication, and artistic skills while helping others locally!
The community is comprised of approximately 29 students and one Residential Advisor (RA). Students who are selected for the program will be guaranteed housing and will be afforded the opportunity to pull in one apartment mate or roommate who is also selected for the program. Both students should apply separately for consideration. Predetermined apartment mate or roommate is not a requirement. All assignments will be made carefully based off of the information provided in your housing application.
Students who participate in the CREATE Special Interest Community will need to commit to the following:
- Each apartment must actively participate in 1 or more service opportunity(ies) of their choosing sponsored by the Community Art and Service office each semester.
- Each student must attend a minimum of 3 Residence Life Special Interest Community sponsored programs per semester.
- Each student must actively participate in the CREATE Special Interest Community service opportunity sponsored by the Community Engagement and Residence Life offices.
To be considered for a SI community please complete the housing application online in conjunction with completing the SI application applicable to your desired community. These applications can be found at the Founders Green, Meyerhoff and Gateway front desks or by downloading the application from our website. Our review committee will hand select the students we believe will gain the most from the experience as well as offer new perspectives to the communities. We encourage anyone that is willing to actively participate, take ownership of the community and be a good ambassador of our SI communities to apply.
