MICA's annual tradition features practical and outrageous fashion creations by students in a wide array of disciplines. Fashion has a way of being in a constant cycle of rebirth, emulating the past while innovating the looks of present society. It shows you what has already been seen, and then imitates it in a new and innovative way. It is a physical manifestation of current thoughts and societal issues, cycling back to the theme of fashion as a reflection.
The 19th Annual Benefit Fashion show, Transcend, was hosted on April 13 & 14, 2012. The designers were asked to go beyond the expected, to transcend their normal accepted thought processes and reveal a deeper, more personal layer of themselves through their garment making. Transcend allows you to walk behind the synaptic workings of the designers' minds and visually see the manifestations of their inner thoughts and striving.
We use our garments as a means of expressing ourselves, choosing to conceal or reveal. Whether this is through the purchase of our clothes, or by breaking the rules of construction, we identify with garments as delicate illustrations of the web that mirrors our internal impulses. Through manipulation, clothing becomes the body itself and reveals aspects of our persona. In striving from vision to form, there is a transfiguration of the artist - not to be released from the human body but to release one's body from oneself. Transcend is a place that is metaphysical, emotional and spiritual. These delicate domains manifest in the realm of fashion; they address solutions, challenge the norms and provide a visual model of unceasing impact.
