EXCHANGE: a home-based artist residency

Artist: Hyejung Jang
Year: 2013

There is an untapped potential for forming intimate and more personal connections between artists and community members who have little or no previous exposure to the art world through an understanding of home as the foundation of social relationships. EXCHANGE: a home-based artist residency is designed to pioneer new ways of fostering a sense of interconnectedness through the arts, support emerging artists and integrate contemporary art into everyday urban living. As a two-month long home-based project it will place emerging international artists with local families in Baltimore. School 33 Art Center is donating a studio and exhibition space for the artists. While the artists and the host families live together they will share meals, their every day lives, and their perspectives on the world. The artists will produce a body of work inspired by their experience with the host families and the city of Baltimore. Additionally, the artists will give one specific work of art as a gift piece to their host family at the conclusion of the project.
