Designing for Teen Pregnancy Prevention

Designing for Teen Pregnancy Prevention by Ben Peterson
Designing for Teen Pregnancy Prevention
Artist Ben Peterson

Baltimore City has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the United States, which can lead to increased health risks including low birth rate. A contributing factor is the communication breakdown between a health care provdier and patient about birth control. Based on the perspectives of Baltimore teens and Baltimore health care providers with an expertise in pregnancy and birth control, I evaluated the problem of Baltimore's high teen pregnancy rate to develop a design intervention.

More about 2012 MA in Social Design Thesis Show

Living and working in East Baltimore, students in the M.A. in Social Design are challenged to explore the designer’s role and responsibility in society, produce new ways of thinking, facilitate new institutional collaborations, utilize design to bring about social change and develop contexts in which their ideas can be sustained. The program implements a project-based curriculum emphasizing learning by doing; extensive studio and field experience create opportunities to work on collaborative, issue-based projects with a variety of disciplines, organizations and community members. The thesis show provides a first-hand look at the innovative approaches and ideas for positively impacting our communities.
