Designing Education

Designing Education by Becky Slogeris
Designing Education
Artist Becky Slogeris
The obstacles to creating meaningful learning experiences are obvious. For a teacher overwhelmed with benchmarks and testing standards, taking the time to conceive of ways to engage students is daunting and time-consuming. How can design make supplemental curriculums desirable and easy for teachers to implement in classrooms so that students aren't merely being taught to a test? "Designing Education" works with select non-profits and Baltimore City agencies to pilot teaching tools and alternative curriculums in Baltimore City Public Schools.

More about 2012 MA in Social Design Thesis Show

Living and working in East Baltimore, students in the M.A. in Social Design are challenged to explore the designer’s role and responsibility in society, produce new ways of thinking, facilitate new institutional collaborations, utilize design to bring about social change and develop contexts in which their ideas can be sustained. The program implements a project-based curriculum emphasizing learning by doing; extensive studio and field experience create opportunities to work on collaborative, issue-based projects with a variety of disciplines, organizations and community members. The thesis show provides a first-hand look at the innovative approaches and ideas for positively impacting our communities.
