Admission Requirements - Master of Arts in Teaching

The MAT provides outstanding preparation for teaching of art. The curriculum integrates hands-on teaching experience with coursework in practice, current theory, and research. Graduates of MICA’s MAT program are highly competent teachers of art who are skilled practicing artists. The two-year residency leads to certification to teach art in grades K-12.

Who Should Apply

The MAT at MICA is for students who have a passion for art, a commitment to children and young people, and a desire to seek certification as K-12 teachers. Applicants with either a BFA or BA/BS degree in studio art are welcome. Successfull applicants typically have comprehensive preparation in both studio art and art history, and a portfolio demonstrating an understanding of the deep purposes making art can serve.

Students considering this program may also want to consider the MA in Community Arts, which prepares students for careers in youth and community development.
