Admission Requirements - Photographic and Electronic Media (MFA)

The Photographic and Electronic Media (MFA) works to sustain a community of artists rethinking the way technologies can digest and extend the diverse practices of photography, digital cinema, interactive environments, sound installations, Web-based practices, social networking, and wireless media.

Who Should Apply

Ideal candidates for the Photographic and Electronic Media (MFA) are highly motivated and independent individuals engaged in promoting ideas, expanding definitions, and perfecting both technical and critical skills. Applicants should be familiar with basic technologies (analog and digital), and should desire to broaden the discursive field and conceptualize media practices in wider cultural spheres. The program seeks to enroll students who can seriously contribute to the radical shifts in the formation, dissemination, and unique historical challenges for image-making and media practices. Selected from a range of disciplines and with diverse expertise, students contribute to the program's expansive circumference through their interests in photography, sound, interactivity, games, wireless, social networking, net.art, and more.

Those who are considering the MFA in Photographic and Electronic Media may also want to consider MICA's multidisciplinary Mount Royal School of Art or the MFA in Graphic Design.

The portfolio may consist of a combination of the media listed below, but please limit still images to about 20 total. For time-based work, a maximum 5-minute reel should be chosen for preliminary viewing. Longer works may be included as supplemental material. For interactive works that do not fit either of these categories, judgment should be used in selecting a portion to be viewed.

For each piece uploaded, please include the following information in the notes field: the original format of the work, length in minutes (if time-based), and year in which the work was completed.

Applicants should submit 18-20 digital images or time-based media for review online via mica.slideroom.com. Slideroom allows applicants to create an inventory of pieces and attach the following information: title, date, medium, dimensions and notes. Applicants may upload images (jpg), video (mov, wmv, flv) or .pdf documents. For good image quality and fast upload, images should be sized no larger than 1280 x 1280 px @ 72dpi. Video files must be kept under 20MB. Our Slide Room portal offers additional instructions for submitting work online.

For applicants to multiple graduate programs, please repeat the upload process for each program.

Any difficulty viewing or using mica.slideroom.com can be reported to support@slideroom.com for technical support.
